Description:

• Folic acid is a precursor of coenzyme - tetrahydrofolic acid (THF), which under physiological conditions occurs as tetrahydrofolate anion.
• Folic acid a key role in the transmission of mono-carbon groups (C1). THF is a supplier of, in particular, methyl (CH 3 -), methylene (CH 2 =) and formyl (HCO-) groups and together with other compounds participates in the synthesis of purine bases and deoxythymidine monophosphate (dTMP), necessary in the process of DNA replication. In addition, THF is a coenzyme for the homocysteine methylation reaction to methionine. The single-carbon (C1) components of THF are supplied, among others, by amino acids such as serine, glycine and histidine. Due to participation in the synthesis of compounds from which DNA is formed, folic acid plays an important role especially in pregnant women and in frequently dividing cells (e.g. bone marrow).
